New Bird Series: Celebrating the Birds of the Kootenay Region

No better way is there to learn to love Nature than to understand Art. It dignifies every flower of the field. And, the boy who sees the thing of beauty which a bird on the wing becomes when transferred to wood or canvas will probably not throw the customary stone. ~ Oscar Wilde

Welcome Neighbours!

12"x16" Mixed Media Painting on Wood Panel by Laura Leeder

As summer transitions to fall, I’ve been inspired by the lively visitors to my backyard here in the beautiful Creston Valley of British Columbia. These feathered friends, with their diverse coloring from neutral to vibrant, and their charming behaviors, have become the muse for my latest series of paintings. I’m thrilled to share the first five pieces in this collection, each capturing the unique beauty of the birds that call the Kootenay region home.

Be like the bird who, pausing in her flight awhile on boughs too slight, feels them give way beneath her, and yet sings, knowing she hath wings. ~ Victor Hugo

Blue Jay in The Dogwood Tree On 8”x8” wood panel

The artwork titled "Blue Jay in The Dogwood Tree" showcases a single blue jay perched gracefully on a branch of delicate white blossoms. The vibrant hues of the bird's blue plumage contrast beautifully with the delicate white blossoms, creating a serene yet striking tableau. The detailed patterns on the blue jay’s feathers add depth and richness, emphasizing the beauty of this fascinating bird. The composition not only highlights the natural elegance of the bird but also evokes a sense of calmness inspired by the surrounding blossoms. This piece serves as a celebration of nature’s artistry.

I don’t ask for the meaning of the song of a bird or the rising of the sun on a misty morning. There they are, and they are beautiful.

~ Pete Hamill

Broadtail Hummingbirds On 6”x6” wood panels

Here, I’ve portrayed a pair of Broadtails. The femail and male have discovered the baskets of fuschias hanging outside the front living room window.

DID YOU KNOW?

The hummingbird is seen as a messenger of joy. It stands for intelligence, beauty, devotion, and love. These little birds are also respected as fierce fighters and defenders of their territory. Hummingbirds are a symbol of good luck.

Each of these paintings reflects my deep connection to the natural world around me, particularly the birds that bring such joy to my garden.

In the vibrant world of birds, the blue jay stands out as a reminder that strength and beauty can coexist in nature.

Blue Jay on a Dogwood Branch

First “mini” painting on 5”x7” wood panel.
